Ulun Danu Bratan temple is a complex temple which located in the near Bratan lake in Bedugul tourism area, Tabanan, Bali. It was established on the natural lake.
Ulun Danu consist of two words, Ulun and Danu. Ulun means high place. Danu means lake. So, Ulun Danu means a lake on the highland.
It was established before 1634 as written in the palm inscription “Babad Mengwi”. The founder was King I Gusti Agung Putu, King of Mengwi kingdom. It was for praying to Goddess of fertility and refer to Shiva’s wife. Then it develop to fair balinese irrigation system (Subak) to supply the water to rice field and plantation around and below the lake.

**) This place often raining and dark clouds. Better you bring your poncho or waterproof jacket or umbrella maybe.
CEREMONY (Piodalan) or Hindus special day on Ulun Danu temple:
16-24 March 2017, Piodalan
21 March 2017, Selasa Kliwon Julungwangi ceremony.
17 October 2017, Selasa Kliwon Julungwangi ceremony.
*) You can see hindus people praying and the sequence of ceremony it self. Awesome culture & ceremony.
*) The roof made from a kind of palm peat, we named it as ‘Ijuk’. It’s black and so thick and natural. Then combined with colorful decoration. Looks so beautiful, right?

HOW TO GET TO THE LOCATION?
There is no direct public transport to get there.
From DENPASAR :
please to reach Ubung bus station – Then, find minibus from Denpasar to Bedugul,
Stop in Bedugul bus station – Then, take a walk to the Ulun Danu Bratan temple .
*) For backpacker i recommend you to rent a scooter to reach this temple and use google map as your navigator.
**) On long weekend the road will be crowded and traffic jam. Google will choose the quiet road which is a small village road. Well, a little disappointed actually because you have to lowering your speed and the traffic jam happened only for the cars. Scooter still can access the road. Better you keep ride on the main road.

Some restroom and toilet. Better bring your own tissue.
Some shop outside of temple selling foods, snacks and souvenirs.
BUDDHIST TEMPLE IN THE ULUN DANU BRATAN AREA:
*) I surprised when found budhist temple on the hindus temple area. Then, i search on Google it was established in the same time of hindus temple.
**) I realize maybe it was influenced of Majapahit kingdom (Java) which popular religion is Shiva-Buddhist. It’s syncretism between Shivaism and Buddhism. But, today is separated religion. Hindus people praying on Ulun Danu hindus temple and buddhist people visit and pray in here for sometime.
A BUDDHIST NUN WATCHING THE BUDHIST TEMPLE:
*) How come the government archaeological and conservation board lets this heritage building without treatment? There are so many grass and algae on this temple. I never found like this in Java and Yogyakarta. What a shame!
