DESCRIPTION:

Uluwatu temple  is one of Bali’s best sea temples. The temple located on the edge of deep cliff and facing to the Indonesia ocean. Positioned high a top a 70 meter cliff. It’s offering the best panorama and sunset view.

Uluwatu consist of two balinese words, ‘Ulu’ and ‘Watu’. Ulu means high place or edge or end. Watu means stone. So, Uluwatu means building made from stone and located on the highland or end of the deep cliff.

There is no stone inscription telling history of Uluwatu temple. But, the chronogram (sengkala) and some palm inscription revealed the history. Chronogram (candra sengkala) is a combination of ambiguous words which remind some important event in the past and enable to figure out of Saka (Isaka) years.

The chronogram in Kurung temple or Kori Gelung Agung located between ‘Jaba tengah’ area and ‘Jeroan pura’ area in Uluwatu temple. The carved chronogram show: Gana sawang gana. It means 808 Saka year or 886 AD. This fact very important since other literature or blog/website informing that Uluwatu temple was build by Mpu Kuturan who arrived in Bali on 923 Saka year or 1001 AD as request of King Gunapriyadharmapatni. So, the chronogram show that Uluwatu temple was build before Mpu Kuturan arrived in Bali. It was 115 years earlier from Mpu Kuturan arrival.

In the ‘Usana’ palm inscription written that Mpu Kuturan who build the Uluwatu temple about 1,000 years ago. It was a place to worship Siva Rudra god refer to ‘Padma Bhuwana’ palm inscription. It marked also by Tri Murti statue in ‘Dalem Jurit’ area in Uluwatu temple. Mpu Kuturan known as the head of hindu priest who unified hindu sect in Bali by Tri Murti concept. He also involved in establishing several other important temples in Bali such as Sakenan temple in Denpasar.

In the ‘Dwijendra tattwa’ palm inscription written that Dang Hyang Dwijendra or also known as Dang Hyang Nirartha developed or expanded the temple in the King Waturenggong era about 1460-1552 AD. Dang Hyang Dwijendra (Dang Hyang Nirartha) is hindu priest from east Java who arrived in Bali on 1546 AD. He was chosen as ‘Purohito’ or advisor of King Waturenggong. Dang Hyang Dwijendra (Dang Hyang Nirartha) chose Uluwatu temple to be his last spiritual journey worshiping place. Balinese Hindu believed that reaching the highest spiritual point of oneness with deities by a strike like lightning and completely disappeared (moksa). The day he disappeared as Anggara Kasih Wuku Medangsia commemorated by local hindu people by visiting and praying at Uluwatu temple.

There are two megalithic stone in the temple area. If both of them are joined, it will looks like a sarchopagus (Megalithic coffin). Seem this area used as sacred place since along time ago, about 500 BC.
