AGUNG VOLCANO

WHAT IS AGUNG VOLCANO?

DESCRIPTION:

Mount Agung, Gunung Agung (literally Fire Mountain in Indonesian/Balinese), is an active stratovolcano located in Karangasem regency, Bali, Indonesia. It is very active volcano in Indonesia and has erupted four times since 1800. Agung volcano has 3,142 meter above the sea level, it’s is the highest point in Bali. It’s located about 65 kilometer (2 hours) northeast of Denpasar city. Thousands of people live on the around of the volcano, with villages as high as 1,250 meter till 1,750 meter above the sea level.

On 1963-1964 mount Agung erupted, it broke the villages and Tirta Gangga water palace. Pyroclastic flow from a large explosion killed 1,148 people on 18 February 1963. Materials flood caused by heavy rainfall after the eruption killed an additional 200.  A second eruption occurred in May 1963 that killed another 200 inhabitants.

On September 2017, an increase of seismic activity around the volcano raised the alert level to the highest level. On September 23rd, it closed for any tourism activities or hindu praying. About 50,000 people evacuated their houses around the volcano.

*) I prefer to use the word ‘volcano’ than ‘mount’ because volcano is for active mount and has crater. Mount is for inactive volcano and has no crater.
