WHAT IS MUSEUM PURI LUKISAN?

DESCRIPTION:

Museum Puri Lukisan is the oldest art museum in Ubud. It was established on 1936 and named as Pita Maha foundation formed by Dutch artist Johan Rudolf Bonnet, Tjokorda Gde Agung Sukawati (the former Prince of Ubud, 1910-1978) and his brother, Tjokorda Gde Raka Sukawati and some famous painter. This foundation concern about the lost & the disappears of the high quality of Balinese art that worldly recognized and might be never come back to its origin.

Along the time the Pita Maha foundation and Ratna Wartha foundation prepare to build a museum of modern Balinese art that designed by by Rudolf Bonnet. In 1954 a foundation stone-laying ceremony was performed by the then Prime Minister Ali Sastroamidjoyo. The name of museum was “Puri Lukisan” (palace of painting). In this time Tjokorda Gde Agung Sukawati became director of the museum and Bonnet the curator of museum. 

On January 31st, 1956 the Museum Puri Lukisan was officially opened for public by the Minister of Education and Cultural Affairs, Mr. Mohammad Yamin. Nowadays within the rapid changes in the art world, the museum focus on modern traditional Balinese paintings and sculptures. Also it active in organizing exhibitions of local artists.

*) ‘Museum Puri Lukisan’ if translating to English means Paintings Palace Museum. It representing a place or palace collecting many kind of paintings.

*) There are four main buildings. The Museum suggest you to start from the South building, then West building, then North building and the last is East building. After that you can get free drink at Cafe.

**) The map below show the opposite of Museum suggestion. It will start from oldest collection, mid age collection until contemporary collection and finish at Cafe.

*) I prefer follow the opposite of Museum suggestion. It will bring you from oldest collection until contemporary collection. So, it feel like a journey of development of art in Bali.

There is no direct public transport to get there. You have to take multiple public transport to reach this place.

From UBUD :
If you stay in Ubud area you can just walk to this place.

From KUTA :
Please to reach Kuta Central Parking first – Then, find Trans SARBAGITA Bus Shelter/Halte.
Then take a Trans  SARBAGITA Bus Corridor 2 – Stop at Batubulan Mini/Micro Bus Station.
Then take a Mini/Micro Bus (Bemo) at Batubulan – Stop at Ubud.
Then take a walk to reach this place.

  • Fee: IDR 3,500 + IDR 20K.
  • Timetable: No.

From Ngurah Rai Airport :
Please to reach Ngurah Rai International Gate first – Then, find Trans SARBAGITA Bus Shelter/Halte.
Then take a Trans  SARBAGITA Bus Corridor 2 – Stop at Batubulan Mini/Micro Bus Station.
Then take a Mini/Micro Bus (Bemo) at Batubulan – Stop at Ubud.

*) It’s really not efficient trip using public transport in Bali. Waste your time, energy and money. There is no fixed price in Bali transportation system, except Trans Sarbagita. If the passenger full loaded you will get the price above, but if quiet (little) passenger you will pay more expensive. Seems they applied operational cost basis since the public transport not so popular today (quiet).

**) For backpacker i recommend you to rent a scooter to reach this place and use google map as your navigator.

***) You can also use Go-jek or Grab transport. Their price reasonable, but you have to install the apps first and the driver may not be able to speak english.

*) I love wood carving art. Seems it’s not easy way to produce 3D object with details, style, expression and put the soul inside of it. I agree that Balinese carving are priceless.
